Center for Language Studies (CLS), University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) organized a workshop on “Corpus Tools for ELT and Beyond” in collaboration with Department of English and Humanities (DEH), ULAB. It took place on July 4, 2019, in the computer laboratory, at Campus-A, ULAB, from 11am-1 pm. Dr. Chris Tang, Lecturer in International Education, King’s College, UK facilitated the workshop. Dr. Tang teaches four programmes at the School of Education, Communication and Society, King’s College London, UK. He is the co-founder and coordinator of the Corpus Research in Linguistics and Beyond seminar series.
The session was introduced by Professor Dr. Shaila Sultana, Advisor, CLS, who emphasized on the role of Corpus Tools in contemporary ELT context. Dr. Tang began the workshop with an overview of corpus tools for ELT. He introduced AntConc, a software developed by Laurence Anthony, Professor at Waseda University Japan and guided the participants through its applications. The participants exchanged ideas and discussed the ways to use the corpus tools effectively for academic and research purposes. A question-answer session was held to explore notable observations from the participants.
Both faculty members and students of ULAB participated in the workshop. The workshop ended with the certificate giving ceremony and Dr. Tang awarded the certificates to the participants. Professor Shamsad Mortuza, Pro-Vice Chancellor of ULAB and Dr. Shaila Sultana also attended the ceremony.
