International Conference on ESP

Center for Language Studies (CLS) of University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), in collaboration with, hosted an International conference on English for Specific Purposes (ESP) titled English for Specific Purposes: Could We be More Specific? on November 9, 2018 in ULAB auditorium at Dhanmondi.

Mr. Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, M.P. Honorable Foreign Minister, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh was present as Chief guest.
Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali inaugurating the conference said learning English is now more significant than ever before as Bangladesh is marching ahead with an economic transformation.

Program started with welcome speech by Professor H M Jahirul Haque, Vice Chancellor, ULAB; followed by the Conference Convener’s speech by ATM Sajedul Huq, Director, Center for Language Studies (CLS), ULAB; then speech by Co-organizer Mr. Toufique Imroze Khalidi, Editor-in-chief, bdnews24. and Professor Imran Rahman, Special Advisor to the ULAB Board of Trustees, delivered his speech in the conference.

Mark Krzanowski, director of the China-based Centre for Academic English Studies in the Surrey International Institute presented the keynote paper. ULAB Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Shamsad Mortuza, Treasurer Professor Milan Kumar Bhattacharjee, Registrar Professor Akhtar Ahmed, faculty members, admin members, and students were present in the conference.

Twenty nine papers were presented at the conference on a variety of topics related to ESP in Bangladesh. A panel discussion titled Employers’ Needs vs Academic Realities: Can the Two be Reconciled? was moderated by ATM Sajedul Huq, Director, CLS, ULAB. The panelists included Mark Krzanowski, Director, Center for Academic English Studies, Surrey International Institute; Ekram Kabir, Vice President, Media, Communications and Sustainability, Robi Axiata Limited; Dr. Sayeedur Rahman, Associate Professor, Institute of Modern Languages (IML), University of Dhaka; Prof. Arifa Rahman, Supernumerary professor, IML, University of Dhaka; Sebastian Pearce, Examinations Director, British Council, Bangladesh; Steve Anthony Jacob, Deputy General Manager, Sales & Marketing,; M Shahadat Hussain, CEO, Astute Horse, Dr. Harurnur Rashid Khan, President Bangladesh English Teachers’ Association (BELTA) and Prof. A.M.M. Hamidur Rahman, Professor & Dean, Faculty of Humanities & Social Science, Daffodil International University.

Academics and representatives from nongovernmental organisations, the government and corporate bodies attended the conference to discuss ESP as a key tool in building skills.

The Universityof Liberal Arts Bangladesh and its curricula are accredited by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh, and approved by the Ministry of Education, Government of People's Republic of Bangladesh.
